How we coach at EVA

The guiding EVA principles are to purposefully create positive, team oriented culture that is effort based. The strength of our programs is in having uniformed vocabulary of teaching the fundamentals of all skills in all age groups.  Our coaches collaborate to provide great experience at all age groups while our club has set standards on specific skill and game concepts.  Below are the main coaching concepts that are core of our organization and each EVA team.

Our teams are very competitive in how we train and our goal is to compete at the highest level at each tournament.  We develop players in practice as complete volleyball players. In younger age groups we do not specialize to just one position knowing that players who are versatile have better game understanding as well as add more value to any team they are a part of.  We develop complete volleyball players who are capable of playing multiple positions knowing that for different teams (school team, club team) you could fit in different positions.

Important coaching concepts in all EVA teams:

  • We teach players to READ the game as we know what we see helps us prepare for what's coming next
  • We coach players to play with purpose and make decisions and not just get rid of the ball.  We purposefully practice what to do in many out-of-system situations as the game itself is messy and decision making is valuable knowledge at any level
  • We coach and put big emphasis on skill fundamentals as we believe that strong fundamentals are the base for any team's success.  Doing simple things well allows us to keep or regain control of the game when things get messy.  Doing simple things well also allows us to keep advancing our game knowledge
  • Knowing that players will meet our expectations, we purposely set them high
  • We pay attention to details as there are no small things
  • We put emphasis on discipline in how we act, speak, conduct ourselves on and off the court - for players and coaches
  • We are an effort-based organization and NO physical punishment for skill mistakes (made a bad pass, hit the ball out...) is used as we raise fearless players who work hard but understand that mistakes are part of the game.  Your best effort however is a MUST!
  • We teach excellence in sportsmanship - ALWAYS
  • We teach accountability among teammates and what great teammate characteristics are.  All team members are equally important regardless of their role on the team.  All players are expected to give their best effort, be supportive, respectful, and engaged
  • We teach how to compete in practice as that's the only way to be prepared for the competition days.  Competitive practices also drive progress as teammates push each other to be the best they can be
  • We have traditionally had one team per volleyball court in practice for each of our team practices which during a season adds to an exponentially higher number of contacts and opportunities to learn and improve.  That training environment directly correlates and results in a higher chance of improvement for each player. We do promote competition as a part of learning and preparation so scrimmages among teams are purposefully planned. This year with some rental restrictions due to pandemic that we are in we might have to more dual team practices but would make them very organized where the learning is maximized for all, and we practice in more competitive way to develop game knowledge.
  • We teach the love of the game as that is the basis of ALL

EVA Philosophy on Playing Time

We serve competitive teams so therefore our plying time philosophy reflects our mission to attract and serve the most driven and motivated players with high goals.  Playing time is earned based on skills, effort and game knowledge.  Playing time is not equal nor can be measured among team members. We develop all players equally in our practices and trainings and strive to give all players an opportunity in the game situations but we will always make the best decision for the team, not an individual player.
We cultivate team oriented culture ('We vs. Me' culture) where all players work toward the same goal of team's success while accepting the role given.  This role is not written in stone and each player can excel in different skills and positions during the season therefore roles can change, again with team's best interest in mind.

All players are equally important and valuable as they all serve in team's preparation for the competition.  Whether your athlete has a large or a small playing role, they are equally important and deserving of the team's success.  Each team will always have more players then minimum requirement to play the game of volleyball (6) so there will always be players on the bench.  EVA coaches look for opportunities to give all players a chance to play in tournaments (especially on pool play days) while in the bracket play (single elimination days) we will always do what's best for the team and that might affect the playing time for some of team members.  This does not make your player any less important to the team nor any less deserving of the team's success and this certainly does not hinder their progress as everyone is trained the same and all the learning is done in practice.  We do not have equal playing time therefore it will never be equally measured across the roster.
Besides skill and game knowledge that coach evaluates each practice there are intangible aspects that also earn playing time like effort, attitude, energy and more.  All that plays a role in line up choices and any coach's choices made in the course of the match, tournament and season.
Players on the bench are required to be engaged and energetic while following the match to provide feedback in time outs as well as be ready when it's their time to go into the game.
Volleyball is a team sport and it requires all team members buying into the team system  and team culture.  Each member is responsible for their attitude and effort which is what we are able to control.  Our training develops the players in all areas as we do not specialize especially 11-14U players as every player needs to learn all skills and all aspect of the game.
